“The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus; it shall blossom abundantly.” –Isaiah 35:1-2

Spring comes late to these hills as icy winds and the last flurries demand their full measure. But while the world struggles in winter’s grip, a small purple flower pushes its way through the frozen ground to emerge at the surface. The crocus (Crocus vernus), with its orangey-yellow centers and variegated petals, promises that spring will come.

As sure as the crocus blooms, God will raise us up to newness of life, too. As sure as spring must follow winter, Resurrection must follow death. Because this is the way in God’s kingdom: Those who humble themselves, God will exalt. Those who return to dust, Christ will raise up to life. So we can be confident that even as winter’s icy fingers clutch at us, spring is already working its way to the surface. Spring is coming.
